Remembering Jason Shinder

In my hands, a copy of Jason’s chapbook, Arrow Breaking Apart, published by Arrowsmith Press. In it he wrote, “May your strenght bring you strength, May your faith bring you faith, May you never be too far from the support of those who love you and poetry. Love Jason” ‘07 Bennington.

He sat beside me in the dining hall eating a plate of peas, only peas. He had a way of eating one thing at a time. Often it was a bowl of brown rice or an apple. We were discussing how to help students after graduation, how to further support them and their writing. He was always full of multiple ideas.

He was my teacher. I loved him. He was the one who wanted to read every poem I had ever written. The day he introduced me at a reading in NYC was the same day he told his friends he had cancer, four years ago.

He died a week ago today. He was loved by many people and will be missed greatly.

I sit today with his words in my hand. When I sit with my friends I pretend I am standing on the wings / of a flying plane. I cannot be trusted to tell them how I am.

Jason Shinder

Jason Shinder has passed on.  I will remember his generous talks at Bennington, all the memories he shared, his lectures on Ginsburg and Kunitz.  And the simple words of advice that resonated with me.  He said them to the audience from a podium, in the middle of one of his amazing stories;  and the advice was not the point to him, or to most.   It was simply a conversational aside.  But it struck me as wise, so I now forget the story, and recall only the aside.  Jason said: “Find some humility, or it will find you.”

I will remember his words. I will remember him.

A poem by Jason Shinder:

Eternity

A poem written three thousand years ago

about a man who walks among horses
grazing on a hill under the small stars

comes to life on a page in a book

and the woman reading the poem
in her kitchen filled with a gold, metallic light

finds the experience of living in that moment

so vividly described as to make her feel known
to another; until the woman and the poet share

not only their souls but the exact silence

between each word. And every time the poem is read,
no matter her situation or her age,

this is more or less what happens.

Poetry workshop poem

The Writer’s Studio

For two weeks, rain has alternated

daily with sun.  In that time,

pine pollen, fine as air, has ripened

and released.

On damp days, puddles swirl

with emerald tracings.

Only on dry, bright days

does pollen fly, blessing

sidewalk and stamen alike

with the same green grace.

This practice we walk,

our words and silences –

your listening, my attention –

fertilize the work.

Pollen does not know its flight

but still it flies.

National Poetry Poem in A Pocket Day

On April 17th copy a poem and put it in your pocket. Carry it around with you all day and read it to your friends, collegues, and family members.

Here is a poem I love and will carry with me.

THIS LIVING HAND

This living hand, now warm and capable

Of earnest grasping, would, if it were cold

And in the isy silence of the tomb,

So haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights

That thou would wish thine own heart dry of blood,

So in my veins red life might stream again,

And thou be conscience-calm’d. See Here it is–

I hold it towards you.
